Split Outlook 2007

Split PST 2007

Latest version of Outlook is Microsoft Outlook 2007. Comprising the improved user interface and added functionality, MS Outlook is becoming the favorite email client. Creating and managing emails in Outlook 2007 is much easier, as of the previous versions. Moreover, the size of Outlook.pst is also increased to 20GB from 2GB. This means now you can store more data in PST. Obviously, this is good that now you have more space to store emails with large attachments but what about the performance of Outlook. Will the large sized PST not affect the Outlook performance? Absolutely yes! As the size of Outlook.pst grows, performance of Outlook is affected in following manner:

  • As Outlook.pst reaches 2GB or nearby, Outlook starts taking more time to start and close.

  • As soon as the PST reaches around 4GB, Outlook starts delaying sending / receiving process.

  • When the size of PST becomes 8GB, Outlook starts giving pauses whenever you perform an operation like adding a contact in the address book, viewing email, exporting contacts, viewing attachments, etc.

  • When the size of Outlook.pst crosses 8GB, number of pauses gets increased and every pause stays for a longer time.

  • With the continuous increase in the PST size, when it reaches to 20GB, then it becomes more vulnerable to damage.

Once the PST reaches its maximum size limit, you receive following error message when trying to move an email item:

The only solution to keep you miles away from the Outlook issues occurred due to large size of PST is to maintain the size of PST to less than 2GB. One can do this by creating a separate PST for every email folder in your mailbox. For example, you can have an independent PST for Inbox, Sent Items, Drafts, Contacts, etc. Having a PST for every email folder enables you to divide a complete PST into small PST files, which are easier to manage than the larger one.
